However, the photoacoustic property of the hybrid nano particles allows them to absorb light and generate ultrasound waves. These waves enable the detection of cancer cells with higher contrast once the nano particles reach them. Ultrasound waves also provide better clarity and can measure the oxygen saturation in the tumor, further improving detection accuracy.
The researchers believe that this technology can be integrated with existing detection and treatment systems. For instance, the nano particles can be activated to produce heat by illuminating them with light using an endoscope typically used for cancer screening. Moreover, the nano particles’ small size, less than 8 nm, allows them to penetrate tissues more easily and reach tumors effectively.
While the researchers have conducted tests on lung cancer and cervical cancer cell lines in the laboratory, further studies are needed to determine the nano particles’ safety and effectiveness within the human body. Once these studies are completed, the researchers plan to advance the findings for clinical development.
